What is the metal rod in the trunk my car for?

I drive a 2000 Toyota Celica and when I purchased the car it was detailed inside with some customs and I noticed there is a metal rod that is in my trunk towards my back seat that attatch to both sides of my car and is stiff and I cant seem to budge it at all. What is this for?
