Changing the earring in my cartilage?

I got my cartilage pierced about 2 months ago with a silver hoop. I was told I had to wait three months before changing it. I will most likely have to go back to the place to get it taken out because I know no way of getting it out without pliers. I am soon going back to the place I got it done for another piercing and I was wondering if I got my cartilage done 2 months ago, if they could change it to one of the studs I got my regular earrings pierced with. It has 14kt gold and a sharp end. I just wanted to know if they would do this for me and if this is an advisable thing to do with the piercing. The hoop earring is irritating my ear slightly and is causing the piercing to heal in a funny shape.
