Can parents have joint custody without their being a primary residence?

I have a friend who recently split up with his girlfriend and they have a 1 year old son together. The mother is trying to claim primary residential custody, but my friend doesn't want there to be a primary residence. They each will have the child for exactly one week trading off. So can there be no primary residence and it just be split?
